It's Supe weekend, and as I've completed for the previous half-decade-plus, I'm joined by means of Timmy Brulia, one of the most head honchos over at the unbelievable Gridiron Uniform Database, and who can be bringing us the uniform histories of the two fighters in SB LIV (Supe 54). There's a LOT to get to over the following two days, so let's just delve right in, shall we? With the 49ers the designated "street" crew, we'll start with their uni history. (Tim writes the history, however I provide the links — so if there's anything else amiss with the ones, blame me, not him!) Here's Timmy:

San Francisco 49ers Uni HistoryBy Timmy Brulia

• • •

1946: The 49ers (or as most newspapers referred to them in the day, the Forty-Niners) started play as members of the All-America Conference. Their unique colours have been purple and white. They wore plain white leather helmets, a undeniable crimson jersey with white numerals with a semi-block font, white pants with a thin purple facet stripe, and solid purple socks. They also had of their closet a white jersey with crimson numbers in the same semi-block font, with red northwestern stripes at the sleeves. The socks have been solid white to begin, but then they wore white socks with the pink northwestern stripes on them.

• • •

1947: The jerseys and socks stayed the same, however gold was once added to the helmet and the pants. The Niners added a red stripe to the crown of the helmet, starting on the front and finishing within the black. The gold pants had a thin pink aspect stripe. The Niners did wear the 1946 white ensemble for a home sport with the New York Yankees on September 21st. Don't ask why, because I have no idea.

• • •

1948: The Niners, apparently now not sure but in their identification, switched to silver helmet and pants from gold. All different trim remained the similar. The back numbers had better fonts from the entrance numbers.

• • •

1949: The Niners, from what we will collect, wore their crimson jerseys for the full season. In truth, there is not any visual evidence that they would put on white jerseys once more till 1955.

• • •

1950: The 49ers join the NFL along side their AAFC brethren Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Colts. The red heart stripe in dropped and the silver leather helmet is now undeniable. A red helmet is worn for a night sport towards the Yanks in New York. A collection of triple white stripes are worn at the sleeves and socks for video games against the Rams.

• • •

1951: The silver helmets are now fabricated from plastic (the 49ers are some of the later holdovers in the exchange from leather to plastic lids). The triple white stripes on sleeves and socks at the moment are an enduring function. The purple plastic lids are worn for an early season Saturday evening game at Philadelphia.

• • •

1953: The Niners open the common season in red helmets with a skinny silver stripe. The pants at the moment are white as an alternative of silver, with the same thin purple aspect stripe.

• • •

1955: For the first time, black is added to the uniform. The Niners define the numbers in black drop shadow. Black may be added to the white pants to create a red-black-red stripe combo. And for the 1st time since their AAFC days, the 49ers wear a white jersey (with white socks) for a recreation at Washington. The triple stripe development has the outer stripes in black, with the middle stripe in crimson on sleeves and socks. It does seem that SF wore silver pants with aforementioned trim for his or her opener with the Rams.

• • •

1956: For the regular season, the 49ers go undeniable. The red helmet with the silver stripe is dropped in favor of a simple white helmet. The purple jersey now resembles the 1951-1954 model (with a slight font trade). The pants, while still white, now function a thick red side stripe. The socks are unchanged. White jerseys are not worn. While most other groups in the NFL undertake the new-fangled TV numbers, the 49ers aren't amongst them.

• • •

1957: Gold helmets and pants, now not observed for the reason that AAFC days, return. The pants are stripeless. The red uni is unchanged. With the NFL now requiring all teams to have a white set of jerseys as well as darkish jerseys, the Niners bust out a jersey with a triple sleeve and stripe combo of outer gold stripes and an inside stripe of pink. The white socks feature the similar stripe combo, with and added group sock with a thick crimson edge.

• • •

1958: The 49ers in any case upload TV numbers to the sleeves. The house pink unis are unchanged. The whites now have a thick red shoulder stripe and solid pink socks are worn with the white combo.

• • •

1959: Yet once more, the Niners exchange helmet and pant colours, going from immediately gold to straight silver. No change to the crimson jersey, but once more a transformation is made to the white jersey as the thick crimson shoulder loop is split into two purple loops, a los angeles the Baltimore Colts. The purple socks with 3 white stripes are worn with both units.

• • •

1960: The helmet will get yet every other tweak. Stripes are added to the helmet. A northwestern taste of 3 pink stripes amend the shell. All else remains the similar.

• • •

1962: At closing, the Niners get a helmet brand! A big crimson oval, thinly outlined in black, with a white "SF" (the "S" in the upper left of the oval, with the "F" within the lower right of the oval) is put on all sides of the helmet. The stripe trend changes as neatly, from the three crimson stripes to a red-white-red combo. Jerseys, pants and socks stay as is.

• • •

1964: One extra (and … remaining!) time, the Niners trade metals. They drop the silver for good and change to gold for the helmets and pants. Stripes as on the helmet are added to the pants. And on the white jerseys, the shoulder loops are changed through the same triple sleeve stripe combo (in crimson) found at the purple jerseys. Fabric materials at the pants give the gold a darker sheen on the back as opposed to the front.

• • •

1969: The 50/NFL patch is worn at the left shoulder of both jerseys.

• • •

1970: With the merger with the AFL in complete effect, the 49ers for the 1st time put on names of the backs (NOB) in their jerseys. They fit the number colour and are in a serifed font. The numbers themselves are a complete block taste different than prior to now worn. Some gamers (notably Cedric Hardman) begin to put on white cleats as a substitute of the commonplace black.

• • •

1971: For a number of early season games for this season and the 2 following seasons (crimson best in 1972-1973), the Niners put on jerseys that don't have any sleeve stripes or TV numbers. This is the transition section from durene jerseys to a lighter mesh-knit material.

• • •

1974: A transformation is made to the quantity font. And white cleats are predominate.

• • •

1976: The white jersey is worn for all house games. In reality, the white jersey is worn for the entire regular season. Also, the pant stripes are widened noticeably. NOB are now sans serif.

• • •

1978: The numbers return to the block style.

• • •

1986: Well into the "Team of the 80's" golden technology, the Niners wear a 40th Anniversary patch, positioned at the left hip of the gold pants. Also, serifs return to the NOB.

• • •

1989: The 49ers add a black define to the 'SF' logo on their helmets.

• • •

1994: The NFL's seventy fifth Season patch is worn at the left breast of the jerseys. Also, the Niners wore special throwback jerseys (paying tribute to the 1955 set) for many of the season, including the playoffs and in Super Bowl XXIX.

• • •

1996: Owing to the popularity of the throwbacks worn in 1994, the Niners make the first main changes to their togs since 1962. Starting with the helmets, the logo is tweaked to function gold outline followed by way of a thicker black define and the stripe trend is modified to a thick purple stripe flanked by skinny black stripes. And the masks colour is changed from grey to pink. TV numbers are moved to the shoulders. And all of the numbers are modified to a double define; the white numbers on the purple jerseys characteristic a double define, a thin gold define adopted via a thicker black drop shadow. the crimson numbers on the white jersey have the same define options. The NOBs also have the same double outline much less the drop shadow. The SF oval emblem is also superimposed over the triple stripes at the sleeves. The pants are modified from gold to white with a black-red-black stripe pattern. The socks are forged pink. The red mentioned here is a deeper hue than previous years. To top all of it off, there's a fiftieth Anniversary patch on the left breast of the jerseys.

• • •

1998: The NOBs pass to a unmarried define, getting rid of the gold outline. In the common season, the pants are modified back to gold, with a northwestern stripe pattern, the outer stripes in black and the middle stripe is a thick crimson. The brand is on every hip of the pants.

• • •

2002: The Niners put on an 80's unfashionable red uni for the November 25 game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

• • •

2005: From 2005-2008, the Niners wear their 80's unfashionable crimson unis for a house recreation or two every season.

• • •

2007: Black cleats replace white cleats.

• • •

2009: The Niners go back to the look of glory as they return to the 1964-1995 style. The helmet brand remains intact, but the stripes pass from black-red-black back to red-white-red and the mask go back to grey from crimson. The crimson jerseys (and pink numbers at the white jerseys) go back to a brighter pink than the cardinal colour that were in position since 1996. The 49ers wordmark is added and placed simply above the entrance number. The numbers and NOB's are again a unmarried color fairly than the busy double outline and the NOB's have a serif. The triple stripe development reach a glance of truncation, because of the modern day sleeve reduce. The pant stripes exchange to compare the helmet stripes.

• • •

2012: Players given selection between black cleats and crimson/gold cleats. For Super Bowl XLVII, the Niners put on the SB logo patch on the left breast in their crimson jerseys.

• • •

2015: For Week 1 (home in opposition to Minnesota) and Week 12 (home towards Arizona) a somewhat grotesque black jersey/black pants combo is worn. The jersey has pink numbers, stripes, wordmark and NOBs just like the white jersey. The pants have two purple sidestripes.

• • •

2016: A 70 Years patch is worn at the higher left breast of the white, red and black jerseys. The black jersey and pants is supplemented with all black socks without a sanitary socks as part of the Color Rush promotion. This used to be worn for the Week 5 Thursday evening affair in opposition to the Cardinals.

• • •

2017: One refined but very notable alternate throughout all three jerseys used to be the relief from 3 truncated sleeve stripes to 2 thicker stripes on what passes for sleeves at the moment.

• • •

2018: The all black look is changed through an all-white outfit for a 10/21 game with the Rams as guests. The jersey has three crimson "sleeve" stripes, crimson front and back numbers with black drop shadow. The pants are white with a crimson/black/red stripe pattern and the socks are solid white.

• • •

2019: For Week 8 (at Carolina) and Week 17 (at Seattle), the 49ers put on the all white combo. As a "bonus" the Niners move with a retro helmet brand (without the gold oval outline) for the Week Eight game.

• • •

Special word: In early 1991, the 49ers held a press conference and presented a new helmet to be worn beginning with the 1991 season. The helmet shell and stripes had been to stay the similar but the familiar crimson SF oval brand was to get replaced by a white stylized "49ERS" with black and purple trim. There was one of these howl and outcry from the 49er trustworthy that it was scrapped and the Niners resumed wearing the normal helmet and not using a hitch. This helmet is not included in the above timeline because it by no means noticed motion at the box of play.

Getting To Know You Me!

Long time readers know I've been doing the weekends on Uni Watch for a while (greater than 11 years, in reality), however at one time, I used to be just a reader (and I commented a LOT again in the day) such as you guys.

Didja ever marvel how I became the Deputy Editor of Uni Watch?

Who "Will getIt™?

Will we see ads on baseball unis soon?

Have NBA jerseys jumped the shark?

Is it cool for prime faculties to poach professional trademarks?

I answer all those questions and more in this Medium.com article with Cullen Lasso of From The Rafters.

The article was once tweeted out via them the day prior to this, and reader Kary Klismet in truth shot me a be aware in reaction:

Hi, Phil-

I sought after to drop you a handy guide a rough observe and permit you to know I thoroughly loved your "From the Rafters" interview with Cullen Lasso. I really like seeing your outstanding work at Uni Watch get a little bit additional reputation! And your solutions have been thoughtful and thought-provoking. Great stuff, and congrats at the pub!

Your solution to the query about top schools the usage of professional workforce emblems refreshed my memory a few fresh conversation I had with a Lyft motive force here in Denver. As a high school artwork student in Harvard, Illinois, again within the late '80s, he designed his school's brand, which they nonetheless use these days. It's an excellent example of the best you advocated – of schools using their very own in-house skill to create their branding, serving to to foster community pride in some way that poaching every other team's emblem by no means may. I'm now not certain if it's something worth sharing on Uni Watch, however I'm satisfied to practice up with more detail if you wish to hear extra of the story.

Anyway, kudos once more on a nice profile! Reading it used to be without a doubt a a laugh little highlight to my Friday.

Best,

-Kary Klismet

He didn't have time to follow up on that the day prior to this (I requested him to percentage the story with you guys), however perhaps he's going to lately (both by means of email or within the comments). What do you guys think about this? I do know we've broached the subject on UW sooner than however what do all y'all think is an effective way for top faculties who currently "poach" pro or school trademarks to take care of it? Do you think it's OK or should top colleges create their own names/logos? And if that is so, how would you suggest they go about it?

Love to listen to your thoughts on that (or the rest raised within the article).

Thanks!
